Potato pots are a thing, and they can help you feed your family. No land to grow potatoes in? No problem. All you need is a good-sized container and a sunny window, or a grow light.

Potatoes can be grown in cardboard boxes (best on a balcony, as they get pretty messy), a bucket (ideally one that’s food grade) or a fabric pot.

You can also buy special potato pots with openings on the side, or pull out sections, that make harvesting easier.

Some potatoes take longer to grow than others, so ideally, you’d have a two or three pots on the go at any given time in order to have a steady flow of tasty carbs.

This video (the first of three!) gets deeply into the subject. If you’re like me, this may be a bit too much information for a starter project, but if you love deep dives… or you’re ready to take your potato growing one step further… this is a great resource.

Note: Potato leaves and stems are toxic. If you have pets that love snacking on house plants, consider growing the ‘taters in a separate room or covering them with a plastic cloche to keep everyone safe.
