Microgreens turn a studio apartment into a mini food oasis.

Microgreens turn a studio apartment into a mini food oasis.

Cute as buttons, Microgreens are sprouts’ older siblings… seeds that have gotten to the point where they’re spreading their first tiny leaves to the sky. Microgreens are nutritional powerhouses that can be grown simply, with very basic equipment. Or, if you choose, you can go all-out and get bougie with fancy grow trays and lights, or hydroponic setups.

I’m going to focus on simple microgreen setups that anyone can do, even if they live in a small apartment with a north facing window.

This video is a really great, very detailed guide for beginners, using soil as a grow medium. My one caveat is that he uses grow lights, which is only useful if you have a consistent supply of electricity.

This article by Peter Burke, on the other hand, talks about growing using no special equipment. He created a simple growing cupboard to use in a north facing window – which, if you have an apartment, may mirror your own situation.

One of the fascinating aspects of microgreens is the plethora of possible growing mediums. Alternatives to soil include coconut coir, water, cheesecloth and… according to a friend of mine… wet paper towels.

Here’s a look at growing micro greens using cheesecloth and compost tea instead of soil:

If you decide to grow microgreens, you can experiment with seeds that you buy in small quantities in a local health food store. Once you decide which seeds you enjoy the taste of, and you’ve confirmed which ones are beginner-friendly, have at it!
