“Hand me the can opener”. “I have no idea where it is. You packed it. “
“Um, no… YOU packed it.”
Silence.

So there you are. TSHTF and you and your significant other are glaring at one another as you hold up your dinner… a can of beans that remains maddeningly inaccessible.

Fortunately, city survivalists are surrounded by a can opener that requires nothing more than elbow grease to work it. I’m talking about the pavement.

Ideally, you have several can openers. Good quality ones, too. But if you don’t, there are alternatives. 

Pavement is just one of them. Here’s how it works:



  • turn the can upside down
  • rub it, back and forth, against the pavement
  • keep an eye out for moisture – you don’t want your food to end up falling out onto the ground
  • When the top edge has worn down, push in the sides of the can and the lid will pop right off
