If you live in a newer high rise, there’s a good chance that your building has a diesel backup generator in the event of a power outage.

It won’t keep power flowing to units, but they will generally maintain emergency lighting in common areas and keep at least one elevator running.

And, speaking from personal experience, this is a very nice thing to have if you happen to be in the underground parking when the power drops.

The problem is that in the event of a longer power outage, or a major emergency, the supply of diesel may not last as long as required.

This means that you’ll be compelled to walk up and down flights of stairs in pitch darkness, especially if you need to get water. Because once the power goes, so do the water pumps.

If there was ever a good time to start walking up stairs, or using the stair master at the gym, this would be it.
