Ditch your GPS for a paper map.

When the grid goes down, your GPS or cellphone won’t be reliable. When it’s up, in can also be tampered with… not that governments would lie about stuff. Right?
Having an old school map book of your city and its surrounding areas can be helpful. Having an old school folding paper map that allows you to get a full view of the terrain is even better.
Whether you’re trying to navigate through dangerous terrain to look for supplies, fleeing violence, or using walkie talkies to arrange a meet up with friends and family, having a visual representation of your turf can only prove helpful.
Add a compass for good measure.
Maps of the “hidden city” can prove useful as well. If you have a large park in your city (think Central Park in New York, or High Park in Toronto), find out whether there are maps.
In a pinch, knowing where to find storm sewers or underground rivers may help you navigate without detection, or find water sources that you can purify later. City maps, or historical maps of rivers, may provide helpful insight.
